Selecting Hybrid Solar Inverters for Off-Grid EPC Projects
Hybrid inverters combine solar MPPT, battery charging, and grid or generator input in one cabinet. EPC bids are lost when the unit trips on motor start, MPPT channels are undersized for real array wiring, or charge profiles do not match the gel or OPzV bank you specified. This article focuses on selection criteria that survive commissioning — not brochure wattage alone.
Topology: low-frequency vs high-frequency
**Low-frequency (transformer-based)** designs are heavier and cost more per kW, but they deliver surge current for pumps, compressors, and legacy AC motors. Transformer iron stores energy briefly to ride through inrush.
**High-frequency** units are lighter, easier for single-tech install on roofs or poles, and efficient at steady-state loads. Surge capability is lower — check "overload" time in the manual, not only nominal kW.
Rule of thumb: rural water, agricultural, and light industrial sites with inductive loads → bias low-frequency. Telecom huts and modern LED loads → high-frequency may suffice if surge list is validated.
MPPT sizing and string design
Count MPPT trackers and per-tracker voltage range. Two common mistakes:
1. **Parallel all panels on one tracker** when roof azimuths differ — one string drags the other
2. **Voc at cold temperature** exceeds MPPT max — morning trips in winter
Build string voltage at record low site temperature, compare to MPPT window, then check current at STC. Inverter MPPT power should meet array STC power minus cable derating — oversizing array 1.2× inverter DC nameplate is common; oversizing 2× without clipping analysis is not.
Our [hybrid inverter range](/products/) lists MPPT voltage windows and parallel capability per model — match these to your module datasheet before BOM lock.
Battery chemistry profiles
Hybrid chargers ship with selectable profiles: gel, AGM, flooded, lithium. OPzV banks often use gel or "user" curves — **do not accept lithium preset** because voltage stages differ.
Verify:
- Bulk / absorb / float voltages per cell or per 12V block
- Temperature compensation coefficient
- Equalization enable default (often should be off for VRLA)
Mismatch between charger and [battery bank](/products/) is a leading cause of early capacity loss in off-grid ESS.
Parallel operation and monitoring
Some projects need two inverters in parallel for capacity or redundancy. Confirm:
- Master/slave wiring and comm cable length limits
- Whether parallel is true load sharing or split-phase only
- SNMP / Modbus availability for your NOC
Document firmware version at commissioning — field upgrades should be in the maintenance contract.
Generator and grid input behavior
Off-grid hybrids often use a diesel or grid input as backup. Check:
- Start voltage and current limits on generator input
- Transfer time when genset kicks in
- Whether solar can assist battery during gen run
Undersized gen input breakers nuisance-trip when AC loads and charging stack.
Efficiency vs night load
Quiescent consumption matters on small systems. A 40W night draw on a 5 kWh bank is meaningful. Ask for no-load consumption and fan policy — fans that run continuously in cool sites waste Wh.
Commissioning checklist
1. Firmware updated per factory release notes
2. Battery profile matches supplier sheet
3. MPPT strings verified open-circuit before connect
4. Surge test on largest motor with data logger on AC voltage
5. Customer handover includes password, settings backup, and warranty registration
Frequently asked questions
**Can one hybrid feed both 120V and 230V loads?**
Depends on model split-phase support — confirm for your destination grid standard.
**Lithium retrofit on existing lead-acid site?**
Often requires new charger profile and sometimes new inverter — budget full engineering review, not only battery swap.
**Are transformer inverters always better?**
No — weight, shipping cost, and efficiency at partial load can favor HF for remote telecom repeaters with known load lists.
**Where do batteries fit in the BOM?**
Size bank per daily load article, then pick inverter charger current that can replenish in available sun hours. See our [OPzV sizing guide](/blog/opzv-battery-sizing-guide/) for ESS math.
EPC teams can send single-line diagrams and load lists for a paired inverter + battery review via [contact](/contact/).
